Escalante Canyon Marathon
Whether you came in first or last or anywhere in between, we hope you enjoyed your race experience, and we’re so glad you joined us during this challenging year. It was wonderful to see so many returning friends along with new participants (whom we hope will become returning runners yourselves!). Overall, it was our fastest race event ever, with Bashash Walio setting a new marathon course record for the marathon of 2:33:28. We trust that the perfect weather made up for some of the traditions we had to suspend because of COVID-19.
Major thanks to all our great volunteers. This event is completely non-profit, and we rely on the willingness, time, and efforts of community members to make it happen each year. In addition to volunteers who return (with a smile!) year after year, the Escalante High School girls’ volleyball team banded together to fill the race packets this year, doing it in record time! From race organizers to setting up the course to shuttle drivers to aid station and finish line volunteers, we appreciate all those who pitched in!
We’re grateful to the Garfield County Tourism Office for providing the core funding for this event each year, and to the UHP, EMTs, and volunteer traffic monitors who always work to ensure the safety of both runners and volunteers. And special thanks to the Escalante Showhouse for hosting the pre-race dinner and post-race beer garden, and we hope these events were well-patronized.
We had two new partnerships this year. We were honored to be associated with the southern Utah Trekking to End Trafficking initiative; we are presenting them with a $400 donation from our proceeds, and we wish them the best in their endeavors. And this year’s t-shirts, for both runners and volunteers, were printed by the Garfield County Jail team of inmates who have developed a wonderful local enterprise.
Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the ECM, and we invite all of you to come back and bring your friends! Hoping that the COVID crisis will be behind us by then, we’ll be planning for an especially exciting event. Mark your calendars for October 9, 2021!
