Race Preview: 2014 Salt Lake City Marathon

by Anna Ratliff

April 19th. Race Day.

For the 11th year the Salt Lake City Marathon will take place, giving thousands of runners butterflies and a reason to train hard.

The marathon has a very positive impact on the economy, bringing in many runners and families to Salt Lake City to explore all it has to offer. The race owners (LifeTime – the Healthy Way of Life Company) have done a phenomenal job in promoting the marathon as a big event, understanding it’s economical value for the city, and even created a new route this year.

This year, like last, has a new course. And get excited! The route should be beautiful, achieving the goal of showing runners all the lovely areas in Salt Lake City.

Like in past years, the starting line is George S. Eccles Legacy Bridge on the University of Utah campus. But the race takes a new direction, meandering through the Federal Heights and the Avenues neighborhoods. Runners also go through Memory Grove, Sugarhouse Park, Holladay, Liberty Park, finishing at Library Square downtown.

Compared to the older courses, this race should be even more beautiful. They have removed the long haul across Van Winkle, and replaced it with more time in the avenues and neighborhoods of Salt Lake. No more grueling State St climbs or lonely stretches.

The Salt Lake Marathon is also accompanied with the half marathon, bike tour, 5K, and kid’s marathon. Registration is open so don’t delay to take part in the race!

It’s a great event towards the end of April, right in time for spring training.
